A descendant of a Robert Steadman (c.1801-1876) is a GD 0 match the descendants of Edward Steedman of Chester Co., SC. Robert was born in Ireland, likely in county Wexford, and died in Ontario, Canada. Robert is said to have been a son of a Michael Steadman (c. 1769, Wexford, Ireland- 1836, Perth, Ontario). Michael served in British military for 20+ years and was a Chelsea Pensioner, relocated to Canada about 1820. Michael undoubtedly had other children, but none have been positively identified; several other Irish Steadman families are documented in Ontario. What this result shows is that Irish Canadian family has a closer DNA match to Edward's family than descendants of Edward's supposed brother John. Whereas Michael and Edward might be 1st or 2nd cousins; John might be more distant. I do not have answers to these questions, but Dave and I agree that the answer will come closer with more DNA testing. 03/11/2014 02:22:13
